Whilst This Fulcrum Insight is being written, world ‘leaders’ are gathering at the UN’s general assembly to discuss, yes, what exactly are they in the process of discussing?
Let’s not dance around the obvious. There is not just one elephant, but a whole herd of mammoths in the air. The people gathered here agree on very little that truly matters. On many of the world’s most consequential issues, they stand in direct opposition to one another. Enter the ‘United’ Nations assembly to feel the air imbued with the atmosphere of latent hostility.
What makes this remarkable is that these are the very people charged with shaping a more peaceful and prosperous future. Among them are sworn enemies, bitter rivals, and individuals who scarcely conceal their contempt for one another, all in a complicated mix of toxic combinations. Yet somehow, progress depends on their ability and willingness to cooperate despite their irreconcilable differences.
No one seems prepared to insist upon the most urgent priority of all: finding common ground on the fundamental issues that will determine humanity’s future.
The foundation for such agreement is staring everyone in the face. Before we belong to a nation, a faith, a culture, or a political cause, we belong to the same human family. The accident of our birth may define where we come from, but our humanity defines who we are. Human first; nationality, creed, race, and ideology second.
What does it mean for us to be human at a time of profound evolutionary uplift and the subsequent emergence of incredible new possibilities to develop and evolve?
What needs to be relinquished in the process of discovering new ways forward to create a bright future for all? What fixing beliefs, attachments, and habits of thought must be surrendered in the process of establishing mutuality of agreement about the profound meaning of being human?
Those lost to themselves, consumed by forces that divide and destroy, seem to lack the ability to comprehend the immense transformational value it offers.
The way to save the world from a self-destruct mode begins with seeking to perceive why the human is on Earth in the first place and letting the answers – as uncomfortable as they may be to the perpetually confused 21ˢᵗ century mindset – determine the nature and direction of the path forward.
Until this happens, the ‘United’ Nations will continue to be the manifestation of a modern-day Tower of Babel, walking away from this assembly even more deeply divided than their state of arrival.
